NHS Prostate cancer project

After client briefing sessions, me and my classmate Yi found the NHS prostate cancer project more interesting to develop as an animation due to the peculiarity of the topic, which makes it quite challenging when considering sensitivity of the topic and the aim audiences. Nevertheless, we wish to face this challenge and produce an animation with all the ability we learned in the past to make it perfect.

After listening to the one hour audio provided, we carefully examined the main topics we wish to focus on in order to extract the most important part of audio to support the animation. The main elements we want to highlight are: early diagnosis, breaking taboo, raising awareness, encouraging to speak up and the most affected community.

Firstly we finished audio editing so Yi could develop a first sketch of storyboard. However, after refining two times the storyboard we still feel trapped by the excessive images which only depict the audio, we consented to modify the storyboard to a more abstract, visual and creative style that allows audience to interpret themself following the audio.

Game Arts

I have chosen theme Magical and mysterious at very first moment of the class because they have always been topics that I have huge interest in, which would facilitate brainstorming process to acquire inspirations. I am fond of designing characters so for the game arts elective, I will mainly focus on building an intriguing character.

Nobody knows his name. Some villagers around the forest say he is only a mysterious pilgrim, but others say he is a witch who has some kind of prophetic power that allows him to see the future… Rumors has been wandering around, people who had chance to have a consultation with him say he uses his third eye to see their fate or maybe is just the power of his weird flying tarot. He used to live in the forest, however, for some reason he decided to travel around the world, maybe just to contemplate the different cultures of each kingdom.

Intro to Animation – Point of view

Brainstorming process

Eating disorders may be caused by several different reasons, the most common ones are extreme diet, stress and depression. Because of current body shape trend (thin=beautiful), many girls have acquired the eating disorders due to extreme diet, but this topic is rarely discussed in society as a mental and physical health issue. Personally I have seen a rise in number of cases of eating disorders and I also have friends who experienced this issue. So the initial concept of this project is for more people to get an idea of this problem, which is hardly possible to be solved by the pacient himself without any help. Therefore, if more people understand that this issue is a mental health condition instead of simple choice of the pacient, they will be able to sympathize and offer help to those who suffer from the condition.

Week 8 – 3D world

sketch

For this rotation, I have chosen a chinese style building which I always wanted to build. I am extremely intrigued by this interior design style because it is always harmonic and relaxing. Most part of the interior design such as furniture and windows are consisted of dark colour woods to bring the contrast to white wall. The texture images used in the rendering are mostly found on internet while the light setting is from Poly Haven.

At beginning I thought learning Maya would be an extremely complicated process, however, by starting the modeling process directly with the tutorial has been an effective way of learning. I may try to explore more functions and modeling tips of Maya in the future.

Week 7 – Character Design

It is a very peculiar experience to explore the shape of random objects and turn them into characters, this activity helped me to imagine and brainstorm through observation and achieve very interesting and satisfying outcome. I explored the shape of water bottle, tape and coffee cup and turned them into simple characters, at first moment it was hard because I could not unseen what is shown, but after some practice my imagination started to flow well.

At first moment, I thought about drawing the theme “winter” as final character design, but as many people has chosen this topic I preferred to explore something different which is an object (scarf). As scarf’s function is to warm up and protect us, I have chosen to make it a cute, shy and smooth temper character. The colours chosen are mainly warm colours too in order to reflect it’s coziness. It has a child appearance and does not have a specific gender, it’s work is just to protect us against the freezing temperatures.

Week 6 – Creative writing

While you were out

I am in this sombre and gelid room, the frightening shadow of furnitures stretches on the floor torturing my lonely soul.

No brightness and coziness of your image reflect on my eyes.

But when you were here, my world is enlightened by your every single action. What imprisons me isn’t this cage, it’s your smile which makes me hopelessly enchanted.

Unfortunately

You don’t know who I am,

But I just want to say,

I love observing you through the wall,

Especially when you weren’t out.

I have chosen this title at very first moment because it really inspire me to make a spooky and creepy story. My intention was to give the storyteller an unsure identity, ensuring a mysterious atmosphere and making readers feel involved in the story. At the end, the reader may wonder who the observer is. He might be a neighbor, a stalker, lover or even a creature that’s not human.
