By listening to the audios provided for this project, I perceived that by only hearing sounds, I can quickly imagine the scene, facial expression and the personality of the speaker. During the process, the clearest image which stuck in my mind and inspired me after listening to all of them is the 5th, in which a kid tells the reason why he/she doesn’t want to be a millionaire.
My initial idea for the character design was simply a child, however, I somehow wanted to give him/her a more special identity that would make him/her reject the willing of being a millionaire. In order to find more inspiration and reference, I dived into LCC library’s animation section and seeked for character and background design from several art books from Studio Ghibli and Pixar. I was inspired by the sketches from Kiki’s Delivery Service art book while listening to a music called Witch’s party. I have done some sketches of character design and I tried using oil pastel to colour the little witch.
However, I decided to use colours that aren’t very saturated comparing to oil pastel, for background I would mainly use vintage and pastel colours based on warm colour in order to give character highlight, meanwhile character will continue to have blue and red as her main pallet component. As the texture of oil pastel was a surprisingly good visual element, I would probably add textures to background and if possible and suitable, to character’s clothing too.
Firstly I wanted to make the animation as an interview format, in which camera should be stable while character have most of movements. However, I considered adjust a bit camera angle in “husband” scene to show more that he might be a powerful and demanding person.
